Windows XP has a built-in Printer Driver. This driver is automatically installed when you install the printer. It is able to handle many of the lower-end printers that are not difficult to install. However, if you have a difficult-to-install printer, or even if you need something more advanced than built-in printer driver can provide, you need to use a third-party Windows driver.
As mentioned earlier, the configuration screens of this driver are refreshed to reflect any updates made to the printer model. Although, this is an useful feature if your printer is not used as much, it can also be quite annoying when many models are supported. If you cannot see the latest or updated setting options of your printer in the driver, you can always revert back to the last configuration for that particular model. To do so, simply scroll to the center of the driver configuration screen, click Last Configuration, and then select the desired printer model. The driver will also return to the default (or most recently used) settings whenever the driver is uninstalled or the printer is unplugged.
The latest version of the Universal Print Driver is capable of automatically downloading updates and also permits the user to make manual changes to their printer settings. The Universal Print Driver supports a wide range of models and resolutions, and thus provides the flexibility to optimize the print process to fit the needs of any user. This not only makes the driver easier to use, it also makes your job easier. Depending on which model of your printer is being used, the driver will automatically download the latest compatible version.
